The accident occurred at around 5:20 a.m. near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College, as the BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. According to police, the vehicle was travelling at high speed and the driver appeared to lose control while negotiating a curve. The car then struck the roadside barrier and fell from the elevated section into an under-construction area below.

Three Students Died

The four occupants were rushed to BYL Nair Hospital following the crash. Three were declared dead, while the fourth sustained serious injuries and remained under treatment.

The deceased were identified in subsequent reports as Shanay Gajjar, 21; Aditya Jakasania, 19; and Dhairya Sheth, 17. The injured occupant was identified as Aditya Oswal, 23, who suffered multiple injuries and was receiving treatment at Nair Hospital.

The students were reportedly from Ahmedabad and were studying in Mumbai. Reports said the BMW belonged to Gajjar's family and that he was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

CCTV Captured the Crash

CCTV footage obtained by news organisations showed the BMW travelling at high speed before it crashed through the barrier and plunged from the elevated Coastal Road. Police said the vehicle appeared to have difficulty negotiating the turn near Lotus Jetty before striking the outer railing.

One subsequent report citing police said the vehicle appeared to have been travelling at around 120 kmph, compared with an 80 kmph speed limit on the main carriageway. This aspect remains part of the police investigation.

Police Investigation Underway

Mumbai Police have begun investigating the circumstances leading to the crash, including the vehicle's speed, the driver's actions and the events immediately preceding the accident. Authorities are also examining available CCTV footage and other evidence from the site.

The crash has once again drawn attention to the importance of speed control and safe driving on Mumbai's high-speed Coastal Road. The 10.58-km road connects Marine Drive with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and is designed for high-speed traffic.

For the families of the three young students, however, the early-morning crash has resulted in an irreversible loss. The incident is also a reminder that excessive speed can leave little room for recovery when a vehicle approaches a sharp turn or other change in road conditions.

The investigation is ongoing, and the exact sequence of events leading to the crash will be established by the authorities.
